Pooja Ceremonies at Naga Pooja 2021

The pooja for Noorum Palum began  at 8:00 am and concluded at 12:30 pm. Every year during Naga Pooja we perform Noorum Palum at Ambalavattam Temple. We proffer the pooja to Nagaraja and Naga Yakshi and endeavour to ward off the evil effects of  Sarpa Dosham and Rahu Dosham. The conviction is that by offering Noorum Palum to Nagas, we get their blessings towards the well-being of all family members. The main ritual consists of bathing the deities with milk mixed with rice powder. Subsequently the deities get a shower of turmeric powder.

Legend Behind Noorum Palum

The legend goes that Lord Vishnu had nursed the burns of snakes using a concoction of turmeric powder, arecanut flowers and tender coconut water. The mixture goes by the name of Noor. The snakes regained health after the treatment of Lord Vishnu. This transpired on the day of the Ayilyam nakshatram. The star is therefore considered auspicious for the worship of the Naga devas. The nakshatra’s symbol is a coiled serpent. Male cat is its animal symbol.

Coronaviru and Naga Pooja 2021

The Government had eased the lockdown in the state related to Coronavirus. However spread of the infectious disease, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, continues to be a matter of much concern. Moreover rail and road transport currently offer lmited services. Restaurants and hotels are not fully operational. Consequently most family members were not able to travel to Thalassery for Naga Pooja 2021 on 5 September.
